POWER OF TECHNOLOGY

Technology plays a vital role in our daily lives and impacts communication, education, and even the dining experience. In the healthcare setting, technology is an integral part of food and nutrition services. Consequently, the need for more flexibility has caused patient meal ordering to become an emerging way of involving the patients in their care.

Patient meal ordering empowers patients with a contactless option to safely order meals on their own, rather than doing it through staff via bedside or room service. As a result of streamlined workflow, staff time can be reallocated toward other patient-centric initiatives, leading to a steady rise in satisfaction scores!

RELIABLE INTEGRATION

By integrating Computrition’s TouchPoint Dining solution with a partnering interactive patient engagement system, hospitals can expand their patient meal ordering options and fully automate patient dining services to give some control back to the patient.

TouchPoint Dining serves as a correspondent, communicating menu data from Computrition’s Nutrition Care Management system to a third-party interactive patient engagement solution, such as an in-room TV monitor or tablet. Once the patient verifies their identity, ordering their preferred meal at their desired time is easily done using a bedside remote or pillow speaker.

While the patient gains more liberties in the meal ordering process, the hospital remains fully in charge of upholding safety by maintaining the sanitation of the devices.

EDUCATE + ENGAGE

Education is key in a patient’s recovery and is crucial in improving outcomes while minimizing readmission. For that reason, nutrition services are leveraging the education component of interactive patient engagement systems to teach patients effective diet management during their hospital stay.

Patient meal ordering through TouchPoint Dining provides customized menus tailored to the patient’s specific diet restrictions and offers features like food item description, dietary limits with alerts, nutrient value for each menu item, and total nutrient value of the entire meal. Even though patients have the freedom to order their meals, if any adjustments are necessary, staff can provide nutrition insights for making improved choices.

THE BIG SHIFT

Additionally, TouchPoint Dining is compatible with a traditional trayline or an on-demand room service program, reducing the cost of labor and additional resources that would otherwise be required to process all patient meal requests manually.

As hospitals automate patient dining services, improvements in the patient meal ordering process not only enhance patient satisfaction but also produce a rapid decline in total food waste. Consequently, nutrition service departments will actualize a big shift in their supply chain performance!
