AHF Conference Takeaways for Healthcare Foodservice Operators

AHF Conference Takeaways for Healthcare Foodservice Operators

The annual Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF) National Conference specializes in connecting self-operated healthcare foodservice operators, facilities, vendors, and professionals. At the event, attendees have opportunities to network, gain powerful insights, and recognize excellence. Expert sessions work to address operators’ most pressing challenges, such as:

  • Staffing
  • Employee retention
  • Patient satisfaction

Computrition was grateful to sponsor and exhibit at the conference, which provided our team with firsthand knowledge of these obstacles. With the following shared values in mind, we can continue to develop software solutions with compassion at the core.

Mental Health

With the demanding and ever-changing environment of foodservice, a prevalent theme at AHF’s National Conference was operators’ emotional wellness and mental health. Given the immense pressure to increase revenue and satisfaction despite limited budgets and staff, the conference provided helpful insights on resources to support healthcare foodservice operators.

Technology also plays a crucial role in supporting staff, as it assists with routine manual tasks. Automation reallocates caregivers’ time to meaningful interactions unique to humans, like making patients laugh or reassuring loved ones about their recovery.

Diversity

Staying attuned to culture is essential for delivering quality care that meets the diverse needs of patients and staff. One AHF session discussed culturally appropriate plans of care and considerations regarding nutrition and food preparation. By approaching meals with respect for all beliefs and values, healthcare foodservice operators can guarantee inclusive nourishment.

Embracing software solutions empowers foodservice operators to diversify their offerings more effectively and efficiently. A nutrition system can centralize information used in reporting, which simplifies the process of reviewing and assorting menus. Furthermore, having functionality that automates ingredient substitution can cater to individual needs and preferences without putting extra pressure on staff.

Sustainability

AHF dedicated a session to the interconnectedness between climate change and healthcare foodservice, specifically how operators can implement a robust sustainability plan. One prominent method is to add more plant-forward options, which are beneficial for patients and our planet. Local and seasonal ingredients can also elevate dishes while supporting producers in the community.

Software solutions present valuable tools to keep sustainability initiatives on track. For example, inventory management helps retailers optimize stock levels to minimize waste from overstocking or spoilage. Data analytics can then identify gaps and ensure supply chain sustainability via improved forecasting, food traceability, and safety measures.

Employee Satisfaction and Retention

Since staffing continues to challenge healthcare foodservice operators and executives, employee satisfaction and retention were rated as top priorities. Finding ways to alleviate stress on employees while providing engagement opportunities is a critical area of focus. Employee appreciation incentives often include catering/foodservice, so executives are exploring ways to offer provisions without burdening foodservice staff.

Additionally, operators are looking at ways to optimize retail environments with innovative technology like self-checkout and mobile ordering. Streamlined meal ordering and payment processes help to ensure caregivers can use their breaks to decompress and recharge.
