$1 Million Savings Achieved by HCA West Florida Division with Help from Computrition’s Hospitality Suite; Selected as Sole Source for HCA Corporate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 26, 2013 - Los Angeles, CA - HCA West Florida Division – a large integrated network of hospitals that is part of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) – gains significant cost savings by leveraging Computrition’s flagship solution, Hospitality Suite. In addition, Computrition was awarded as the sole source foodservice solution provider for HCA corporate-wide, which has 162 hospitals as part of its network. With over 30 years of experience, Computrition has a proven history of providing significant costs savings, streamlining sophisticated operations, and implementing solutions at the enterprise level, especially for multi-site operations as in the case of HCA West Florida Division.
As reported in The Source, a quarterly magazine by the HealthTrust Purchasing Group, HCA West Florida Division was able to gain significant costs savings using best practices along with using Hospitality Suite as described below.1
The division needed a solution to manage costs while balancing the quality of food. Joyce Hagen-Flint, Division Director, Food, and Nutrition Services, spearheaded the effort and through the division’s endeavors, were able to lower costs using a combination of factors such as supply chain compliance; implementing a room service delivery model; modifying recipe ingredients; and using Hospitality Suite.
The results have been so positive that Hagen-Flint has been awarded the 2013 Outstanding Member Award. The winner is selected on the basis of demonstrating "the greatest financial improvement using HealthTrust cost savings initiatives, contract compliance and adoption of new contract categories."2
The division is currently contracted with Entegra Procurement Services, the sole source foodservice vendor of the HealthTrust Purchasing Group, and by increasing compliance, they were able to reduce costs dramatically. With a 95.8% compliancy rate, they saw savings of $1 million in 2012, according to Hagen-Flint. This in part was enabled through the use of the Hospitality Suite system and its reporting engine that shows costs associated with vendors.
At HCA West Florida Division, they use Hospitality Suite for room service patient meal delivery that includes the use of wireless tablets for taking bedside spoken patient meal preferences and orders. The results have been positive as they have seen significant savings using the system. They have also implemented its electronic ordering function that can dramatically increase their food production efficiency, division-wide, especially when adhering to supply chain compliance.
Mary Ann Moser, RD, Director, Food, Nutrition, and Conference Services at Medical City Dallas said, "The West Florida Division should be pleased with the results of converting to room service and Computrition, given the experience of HCA’s North Texas Division, which converted to that model nine years ago."
According to Moser, the hospital experienced significant decreases in food waste and a boost in patient satisfaction. In reference to satisfaction scores, she continues in saying, “We have been in the 90-plus percentile for at least two years . . . and have hit as high as the 96th percentile.” At the hospital, they also leverage Hospitality Suite to develop unique patient menus based on restrictions. With this method, patients were presented with meal choices based on their allowed diet; thus reducing the chances that they receive incorrect or inappropriate meals.
